poetry thursdays

My plan was to post this much earlier...but I spent the evening at an urgent care center at the hospital with my husband. He is fine. Still, some scary moments...He is fine. He had to have a CAT scan. He is fine. I appreciate the kindess of doctors and nurses on an evening like tonight. A thank you from my heart to those of you who take care of others in this way.

I have a new idea. Poetry Thursdays.
An invitation to read a new poem or an old favorite.
An invitation to take the poem with you to the bathtub to have your own poetry reading.
An invitation to rediscover a poem that you love and share it with others.
An invitation to write a poem. Yes, you. Write. A. Poem.
An invitation to look at the world from another's perspective.
An invitation to let words resonate within you.

And I plan to extend this invitation through sharing a different poem each week. One I have discovered on this journey into poetry that I find myself on this year.

I read this one out loud to jonny tonight as we were waiting for the doctor to come back to tell us the plan...

Many Miles

The feet of the heron,
under those bamboo stems,
hold the blue body,
the great beak

above the shallows
of the pond.
Who could guess
their patience?

Sometimes the toes
shake, like worms.
What fish
could resist?

Or think of the cricket,
his green hooks
climbing the blade of grass-
or think of camel feet

like ear muffs,
striding over the sand-
or think of your own
slapping along the highway,

a long life,
many miles.
To each of us comes
the body gift.

- Mary Oliver

I would also love Poetry Thursdays. I am not much of a poet, I only dabble because I am in a poetry class but I love to read old poetry.

I'm glad your husband is fine. And hope he gets stronger, even more fine soon.

I only had to read the first two lines ...the feet of the heron under those bamboo stems to know it was Mary Oliver's heron. I love that our tastes in poetry overlap so much, Liz.

Great idea to share poetry regularly, not only with the blog readers, but with yourself, with the steam in your bathroom, with spouses, children and animal companions. with trees. I'll contribute. so is your blog going to be the "meeting space" on Thursdays?

Oh how i love the idea of everyone participating in this with me! Love it! Love it!
For now, if you want to share a poem, you can a) post it here in the comments for others to enjoy or b) post a poem on your blog and leave a comment directing us to your blog.

bring it on! i love this idea. i had my own poetry reading with ms. oliver today. nothing goes better with an overcrowded, noisy cafeteria than her soothing, "pay attention now!" words.

Great idea!!!!! I love Mary Oliver!! She is one of my very favorites! Do you know Edna St. Vincent Millay??? I love her also!
I'm glad your hubby is okay also!

I didn't realize that was a Mary Oliver poem until I got to the bottom but I should have known - so so great. I love the way she thinks about things that probably very seldom ever get considered! I hope your husband is well - my thoughts are with you. Sounds very scary. And I love your idea. I don't take the time often enough to seek out new poems so this will be great for me.

I love the idea of Poetry Thursday!

So glad your husband is ok.
Do you realize you told us 3 times "He is fine" in this post? I suspect you were really reminding yourself that "he is fine" since the words appear only a sentence apart in repetition.

Bless your heart! Sorry you had such a scare and glad it is being resolved.

As always I enjoy your posts. Have a good, restful weekend. :)

I love this idea. We need poetry in our lives. Dedicating a day each week to wrapping oneself in it seems a good way to do that.

February 17, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterKathryn

You posted that Derek Walcott poem? I wasn't sure where I picked it up, but I printed it off, decorated it, and it's in my kitchen as a reminder, a reminder that there is always love.

I would love to participate, especially to give you all a glimpse of the many wonderful Irish women poets that maybe don't get heard across the Atlantic.

HI! I've missed reading you!! Glad to hear your husband's okay. It always comes back to Mary Oliver, doesn't it? (I mean that in the best sense...she's so fabulous.)
