a day in april (inspire me thursday: think big)
This is my creation for the challenge Think Big.
I usually work on paper and in smaller sizes, so I decided to try a larger canvas. I had the idea to incorporate a hummingbird, then the big flowers. And one thing I love about canvas in this case was that I could paint over things when they went a little differently than I had planned. As I thought more about the challenge, this image of a little person sitting at the foot of the flowers appeared. Then came the story:
The song of your heart has called me.
Can you feel your wings...
do not be afraid...
climb up
and I will show you how to use them.
The image at the bottom...the words say:
...and on a day in April, she heard her own song, and she began to climb.
Images of wings and flying have been going through my head lately. Looking at the work of other artists has been inspiring me. In this artwork I have seen and in the words I have read, there seems to be a connection between finding your wings, finding your path, and finding your tribe. Wings invite me to once again think about letting go. And in the midst of this afternoon, my thoughts turned to my grandmother and the idea that maybe the hummingbirds were speaking to her over her entire lifetime and then, one day, she joined them.

Liz, your talent, insight, sensitivity all astound me. I am so aware that your inside self is magnificent the more you show her to me! This work is amazing. I love what it represents and how it looks.
Your grandmother is such a huge inspiration to you. Was she your Mom's mom? Does the parent to whom she belonged know how much she affected your life? She surfaces frequently, and I am so glad you have these memories and thoughts of her to inspire you and bring you such joyful feelings and ideas.
Please tell me - is the entire canvas "painted" or did you add the hummer and the little person out of other material to the canvas and combine that with paint? It is hard to see texture here in the photo.
Beautiful, just beautiful. I especially loved the surprise of the little person as I had to scroll down to get the entire image on my screen. I also love that the hummingbird is cut from sheet music and its feeder is a measuring tape ... so many levels!
oh my god this is wonderful and AND AND AND AND
guess who else you are going to meet at Artfest? That's right baby! I'm there, too!
Woot!!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!!!!
One of my closest friends lost her brother to luekemia years ago. When we hang out we spend a lot of time outdoors, kyaking etc. Last summer she told me that everytime a butterfly, ladybug or other creature comes and lands on or near her, that it is her brothers spirit coming to visit.
I loved that and since have felt so blessed when I have experienced a "visit" from my mom. I loved what you said about your grandmother, and the observations of the currents flowing through the work in this beautiful community.
Liz, I absolutely LOVE this piece of work. I love the music in the hummingbirds, I love the words, the big/small reversal. It's magical and touching. Thank you.

What a gorgeous piece. Thank you for sharing more of your brilliant creativity. I love the words and the mixed mediums (or is it all painted?). If only I could have a virtual gallery with works from all my talented bloggers! I've always had an attachment to butterflies...

Oh wow! I love this... the images of being called to go higher, to soar instead of lumbering along on the ground...
That resonates with me in ways I can't begin to express.
