an apron giveaway
as i mentioned friday, i have been finding quite a few vintage aprons lately and wanted to share...so i am hosting a little giveaway for this springy pink and white checked smocked apron and a few other surprises.
(did you catch alicia's joy while smocking earlier this year? i suddenly started to notice smocking everywhere after her series of posts on the topic. items that are "smocked" really are quite adorable.)
to enter this little giveaway, all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. i would love it if you would share a favorite apron memory or story in your comment. if you don't have one, share something that has made you smile lately. i will close the comments on thursday evening and draw a winner friday.
comments have been closed for the giveaway. thanks so much for participating. check back friday afternoon for the winner.

an apron was the first thing i ever learned to sew, at age 10. i spent summers with my grandma in arizona, and she taught me to sew while telling me how her grandmother had taught her. i always equate aprons with love; i bake to show affection, and when i'm baking something special, i love to put on an apron. this memory and habit have cemented aprons in my mind as a sign of joy...i finish my first year of teaching 5/29 and i look forward to spending lots of time in mine this summer :)
hope you are well.

i wish i had an apron story to share
but there is absolutely
no one
in my family that
has ever worn an apron
to my recollection...
that said...i could be the first.
:)
what has made me smile today?
the fog of a headache finally lifting after 6 hours....
the memory of last nights
evening spent with a best friend
breathing the same air
as leonard cohen...
sigh...
even at 74...he's amazing.
What a pretty apron! I only have one apron story and hope you find it funny: I was wearing a vintage apron over a modern dress while preparing to host a ladies tea party this past winter. My husband was heading out the door when he noticed my get-up, and he asked why I'm not dressed like that when he gets home from work. HA - what a guy! (he was kidding, of course)
My mom always worn an apron while she was cooking or baking and I had a small version that I still love. Just by coincidence, I'm wearing my Little Room apron right now! I don't bake or cook hardly at all but wearing an apron makes me feel connected to my mom, her mom and all the women who came before me.
hmmmm ... i don't really have an apron story though the other day, some musicians came over to rehearse in the basement with my husband and i was wearing one of my cute vintage aprons and they said it was cute and it seemed like a cute hippy thing to wear an apron ... here i thought i was emulating more of a forties housewife, lol ...
i love aprons though no one in my family other than me wears them. my gran used to wear housedresses and i inherited them and have taken to wearing them as well, they are like dress aprons i think ...
what made me smile today? the fact that my garden is fully planted and my planters are filled with flowers : )

I didn't actually start cooking till after I left home and wearing an apron came hand in hand with developing that new skill.
I sewed my first apron when I was 21 years old after collecting a lot of advice from my mother-in-law (a seamstress) and my grandma (who I am still convinced knows everything.)
A few frantic phone calls and one email later I ended up with a pattern, then a few hours later I was the (extremely proud) creator of a blue and orange apron.
I still have it and while it is not the prettiest apron in the world (especially after being dragged through crafting, gardening and learning to cook) I love it because so much love was put into it.
Found a cute blue gingham apron at a garage sale a few weeks ago. That made me smile!
My first apron was one my mom had made when she was a kid, my favorite part was a yellow hand towel (that was very worn out)that was sewed onto the apron for easy hand cleaning while baking. When I was little I would imagine my mom wearing it when she was little too. I hadn't worn aprons again until recently after getting my own place, and can't get into the cleaning or baking mood without one on.
That totally gorgeous apron has made me smile, I love the pink, the ginham, the pocket... it is all so cute. Thanks, I needed a smile today!
There were never aprons in my house growing up. My mom didn't wear them, but I do vaguely remember my great grandma wearing one. I didn't really think about aprons until my husband found a Nintendo apron for me at a garage sale, and now i wear it all the time!
I have my grandma's apron always hanging in the kitchen, and although since receiving it I've made a few myself, this one will always be my favourite. I feel a little sad that she is not around to see me using it, as it is a handmade apron she just made for herself, probably in the 60s. You can see a pic of it on my Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/8481423@N07/1971243363/in/set-72157603782121143/
I also like that when my dad comes over and sees me wearing it he looks uncommonly pleased (Grandma was my dad's mum). I like that every time I put it on, not only do I feel like baking up a storm and cleaning with purpose, I also stop for a moment and remember Grandma. And it makes me smile.
i'll be honest, i rarely wear any of my aprons (i only own two!). my husband does, however, and i think he couldn't look more gorgeous than when he does ;)
hmmmm...apron memories. i have so many and the all stem from my grandma becky. she used to iron the st. boniface linens. she had half aprons, smock aprons. she would wrap the long ties gently around our waists, one - two - three times. we loved getting to help with the linens and making dinner. ah...simple days
About 2 years ago, after I got home from AF having met you, I started reading your blog every day. You were posting about Aprons back then and after seeing some of yours, I made myself one in chocolate and aqua. It's a half aprong with pockets and I wear it when I teach so I have somewhere to tuck my scissors, etc.
Thank you for inspiring me! I love aprons too-there's just something about them that reminds me of my childhood on the Canadian prairies.
Oh my gosh! I love the smocking on that apron! I think I love smocking on anything. I've always admired the aprons worn on asian airlines, like Korean Air. They make the flight attendants look they are serious about serving us a nice meal. Not much of an apron story, but apron's have really only had a utilitarian purpose in my family's kitchen. Oh wait, there was the time one of my past boyfriends met me at the front door in nothing but an apron after making me mac and cheese - that was a nice surprise!
What a lovely apron. That pink sure made me smile! I come to your blog often when I want to smile. I'm just learning about aprons and I don't really have any to share but I've just made my first one and hope to make many more. ~Lee
No one in my family has ever really worn aprons. The only time I remember one is when my Uncle Charlie (who was rather like a grandfather to me and my sister) covered us in giant dishtowels pinned to our clothes to teach us how to clean and deep fry fish. This being after he'd taken us out and taught us how to catch fish!
Liz.....I have been looking at your blog for a couple of months now and can honestly say that your writing is so touching and really "makes me feel good!" Your thoughts...ideas.....views and pictures are so close to my own. My apron story is this: My mom passed away about 2 years ago at the age of 87. She always loved aprons....tablecloths.....and hanging sheets on the line, watching them blow in the breeze. I do believe that she was her happiest then. Her aprons were always whimsical and she always felt dressed up with one on. Your apron made me smile! Thank you for your beautiful words. You truly do bring me peace. With love to you Liz......Marie C
I inherited several of my mother in law's aprons and wear them only on the holidays. They were her everyday aprons which means missing buttons and stains and much too large for me but I love them and always feel like she's helping me do the cooking when I wear them. xo
There were aprons for everyday, aprons for holidays, aprons for company - all in the third drawer down at Grams (outside Snohomish). Even though I would trip over it, there was always an apron available when I "helped" in the kitchen. I wish I would have spoken up and said I wanted them because the aprons where Gram's hugs around my waist. Cheers and thanks for the trip down memory lane.
No one particular story, but I vividly remember my mom always wearing one, and often making some! I meant to look to see if any were still around last weekend when I was home, but I forgot. I'd love to have one of them!
I love aprons and can't wait to make some with my new sewing machine. I only own four right now that belonged to my grandmother. I love it when my girls wear them when they help me bake ; )
Cute apron! The only person I remember wearing an apron was my step-grandmother, who favored the vest type that you pull over your head, and has ties at the sides. A few years ago, I found one like that in a thrift store -- a busy pattern of bright blue and green flowers and tea packages, with little line sketches of "Chinese" landscape scenes. And, best of all, blue pom-pom trim! It's too small for me, but I'm thinking about hanging it on a wall somewhere, just cause it makes me smile.
And if you check my blog, you'll see that there's an award for you....
Oh -- and I meant to say, I love smocking, too! My mother-in-law did a ton of smocking on her daughters' clothes, and now I have her sewing machine, complete with the smocking foot. Don't know that I'd ever use it, but you never know.
my grandmother always wore one and my mother never did....when my older kids were little I always did and kept treats in the pockets that they would have so much fun finding while we cooked or crafted together. I liked being like my grandmother, aprons always leave me feeling grounded and serene....
