breathing above water (in westport, washington)

grey whale tail 1

in my dreams
they nudge me hello, then teach me to breathe
and i twist and turn and swim beside them

grey whale tail 2

and saturday, i got to spend time with them outside my dreams
and they came as close as ten yards from the side of the boat

grey whale tail 3

i laughed through tears of joy
as my heart felt like it was home

oh how wonderful ... once when i was in tofino on vancouver island heading out to meares island, 3 grey whales came close and then one largest came up behind the boat and emerged beside me, so close that i could reach out and touch her soft spongy barnacly skin, it was amazing. i have never seen these beauties that close, it must have been exhilerating. i love these kinds of special encounters that live inside you forever ... :)
